The
Department of Agronomy, one of the
oldest departments of the Institute of
Agricultural Sciences, was established
as section in the year 1951. It became
full fledged department in the year
1969. So far the department has
produced more than 285 M.Sc. and 155
Ph.Ds. They are holding key positions in
the Agricultural Universities, Colleges,
ICAR Institutions, NGOs, Banks, Public
Sector units and administrative
services.
The department of
Agronomy offers courses at under
graduate, post graduate and Ph.D. levels
related to crop production, soil
fertility, water management and weed
management. Several coordinated,
collaborative and ad-hoc research
projects funded by ICAR, RWC /CIMMYT and
World Bank are operating in
the department. The major research
achievements relate to field crop
production, natural resource management,
conservation tillage (rice-wheat
system), in-situ rain water management,
farming system, boro rice, targeting
resource conserving technologies
integrated use of industrial and farm
wastes with minerals and bio-activators,
fly ash, identification of research gaps
in rainfed intercropping system,
chickpea phenology, dryland agriculture,
cropping system, seed production, wheat
barley, rice, pulses and oilseeds
agronomy etc. during the last five
years. The technologies developed are
being validated through on farm adaptive
research for its promotion and diffusion
in the region. The department has also
organized farmer traveling seminar,
farmers gosthis, farmers training, field
days, field demonstrations, on farm
trials etc to promote transfer of
technology evolved. The department
handled 2 coordinated, 5
interdisciplinary, 3 NATP and 8 ad-hoc
research projects. It has research
linkage with RWC (CIMMYT), IRRI, World
Bank, Directorate of Agriculture U.P.,
U.P.C.A.R., I.C.A.R., U.G.C.
and other development
agencies. Developing appropriate
technology for resource conservation,
management and utilization through
watershed approach in farmer's
participatory mode; seed production,
alternate land use system comprising
agro forestry, silvi pastoral, agro
vegetable. Boro rice cultivation,
Integrated nutrient supply system and
minimum till farming for improved soil
quality will be thrust areas of research
and development activities of the
department. |
