Prof. D.P. Singh is the 24th Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi. Prior to joining BHU, Prof D. P. Singh was Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Hari Singh Gour University, Sagar, the oldest University of Madhya Pradesh. During his tenure at Sagar, the University was reaccredited with 'A' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2007. Later on, his arduous efforts bore fruit when Dr. Hari Singh Gour University was accorded the status of a Central University. Before this assignment, Prof. Singh has served PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education, an apex institution of MHRD at Bhopal, as Professor in Environmental Science and Head of HSE Division. He has also served in other Universities and Colleges as well as in organizations involved in environmental studies in various capacities.
Prof. Singh has about 30 years of rich professional experience in different aspects of Management and Administration; Teaching and Training; Research and Development; Project formulation and execution (both international and national); Educational Journalism including editing; Extension and Evaluation in various capacities including the experience as Vice-Chancellor of two Universities for a total duration of about seven years.
Prof. D. P. Singh has contributed substantially in the fields of environmental science, vocational education and value education. He has more than one hundred publications to his credit in the form of books, research papers, articles etc. He has also acted as Executive Editor of Indian Journal of Vocational Education.
Prof. Singh has significant exposure to International programmes and experience of handling International projects. He is widely travelled and has visited United States of America, United Kingdom (5 times), Germany, France, Norway, Denmark, China, Australia, Hongkong, Thailand and Malaysia for academic pursuits. He has participated in several International programmes / seminars / conferences as Chairperson of technical sessions, group leader, invited speaker and delegate.
Prof. D. P. Singh is contributing to a great extent in other higher education assignments as well. He is member of Executive / Academic Councils of several Universities including Dr. H.S. Gour University, University of Allahabad, Mizoram University and Central University of Punjab. He is member of Court of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, member of General Body of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi, member of Society of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Kolkata and Bhopal, member of Society of Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarnath, member of Executive Council of M.P. Council of Science and Technology, Bhopal, member of Council of Indian Ceramic Society, Kolkata etc.. He is also member of Executive Committee of National Assessment and Accreditation Council, Bangalore and member of General Council of National Board of Accreditation (NBA)- an autonomous Body of AICTE, New Delhi.
Prof. Singh is member of several committees constituted by MHRD / UGC including the Core Committee of Vice-Chancellors. He is also a member of Governing Council of Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.
Prof. D.P. Singh has been bestowed with several honours and awards such as Environment Leadership Award (2010) by Agriculture Today, the Environmentalist of the Decade of Purvanchal Award by Hindustan Group, Bharat Jyoti Award (2010) by India International Friendship Society and U.P. Ratan Award (2010) by All India Conference of Intellectuals etc. The honours include the honorary rank of Colonel Commandant by Directorate of NCC, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India and honours by the BHU Alumni Association of North America, New Jersey, USA.
As Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University, his focus has been on developing conducive learning environment, enhancing academic and administrative efficiency, nurturing excellence, institution building, encouraging international collaborations, developing an eco-friendly campus, inculcation of human values, and strengthening student support system. Under his leadership, the BHU has formulated Value Promotion Policy, Quality Policy and a Policy on Environment and Sustainable Development. Through his concerted efforts, a new "Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development" and a UNESCO Chair for Peace and Intercultural Understanding have been established in BHU.
