Bengali has been taught in the undergraduate classes since the establishment of the University, . Teaching at postgraduate classes commenced in 1968. A separate department of Bengali was established in 1972. A large number of research scholars have been awarded Ph.D. degree. In the entire north India, it is the only department, where Bengali is taught in UG, PG and Ph.D. levels.

The department has a good collection of rare books in its library which contains about.4600 titles. The department holds extension lectures for the students in which eminent teachers from other universities are invited to deliver lectures.
