The Faculty of Arts is the oldest Faculty of Banaras Hindu University. Being mother faculty of the University it shares major responsibility of imparting job oriented and value added education. The faculty has a stellar of renowned alumni and teachers like Prof. S. Radhakrishnan, B.L.Athrey, T.R.V.Murthy, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Baldeva Upadhyaya, Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan, A.K.Banerji, S.R.Ranganathan and P.N. Kaula, Ramchandra Shukla, Shyam Sundar Das, Shiv Prasad Singh, Rewa Prasad Dwivedi, Srinivas Rath, Pt. Ram Avatar Sharma, A.S. Altekar, Raj Bali Pandey, R.C. Majumdar and A.K. Narain (A.I.H.C. & Arch.) and we have kept the tradition alive.
Faculty of Arts offers a number of courses through its 22 departments. The courses include, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, Post Graduate Diploma in Tourism and Travel Management, Master of Physical Education, Master of Journalism and Mass communication and Master of Library and Information. We are the major attraction for foreign scholars who wish to study religion, philosophy and classical languages.
The Faculty has more than 200 faculty members with excellent academic background ready lend help to the students. The Faculty runs some courses in collaboration with Faculty of Science, Baranas Hindu University and Faculty of Social Sciences, Banaras Hindu University in order to expose the students to explore knowledge in other disciplines.
With the initiative of Ministry of Human Resource Development of India the Faculty introduced Choice Based Credit System in its undergraduate programmes. In Choice Based Credit System, a student is free to study any course offered in various departments of the Faculty and earn the required credits in order to fulfill the credit requirement to earn the Bachelors degree. This will enable the students to customize their course structure so that they meet the desired goal of their life.
Faculty has rich collection of books in its library for the students of undergraduate programme where as post graduate students can utilize the libraries of their respective departments. The Faculty is planning to pool all the libraries into one so that students are more benefitted by reading books from other subjects to. There is a new administrative block coming up in order create more space to the students and teachers for conducting their classes.
