Message from Dean

Founded in 1898 by Mrs. Annie Besant as the Central Hindu College, the Faculty of Arts is the nucleus around which Banaras Hindu University developed. It is not only the oldest Faculty of the university, but in its traditions and diversity, represents the ideals that Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya had in mind when he established this sarvavidya ki rajdhani as a synthesis of the pratichi and the prachi. This is seen in the twenty-two departments of the Faculty which represent the cultural diversity of the country and through its various departments, ranging from Ancient Indian History Culture & Archaeology, History of Art and Hindi on one hand to English Literature and Philosophy on the other, besides the various other Indian and foreign language departments, vocational courses and professional courses. This is borne out by the range of degrees that the Faculty offers Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, Postgraduate and Undergraduate Diploma and Certificate courses, Bachelors and Masters degrees in Physical Education, Journalism and Mass Communication, Library and Information Sciences and Tourism Management. A long line of distinguished alumni and teachers has been involved in the realization of the dreams of the Mahamana:, Prof. S. Radhakrishnan, Sir Ganesh Prasad, A.B Dhruva, R.S. Tripathi, V.V. Narlikar, Prof. Sheshadri, Shyam Sundar Das, Acharya Ramchandra Shukla, Keshav Prasad Mishra, Vishvanath Prasad Mishr, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Acharya Baldeva Upadhyay, Prof. V.S. Agarwal, A. S. Altekar, Raj Bali Pandey, B. L. Athrey, T. R. V. Murthy, R.C. Mazumdar, to name a few.
In a fast changing world where traditional notions of scholarship and learning are fast becoming obsolete, the Faculty of Arts maintains a delicate balance between humanistic impulses and scientific literacy, and strives, through its blend of tradition and innovativeness, to reach out to diverse sections of the student community. To this end the Faculty also collaborates with other Faculties like Social Sciences and Science.

Not immune to the needs of changing times, the Faculty has also developed its infrastructural facilities, and the new building of the faculty, the Abhinava Bhavan, was inaugurated on 8th November 2012. Besides a centralized library and reading room, the four-storey building also has a conference room and teachers chambers. Besides, the construction of a lecture theatre complex and auditorium is nearing completion. A new building for the Department of Physical Education is also complete. The construction of a new undergraduate hostel is in full swing. The Faculty also has plans of a separate seven-storey building for the language departments. With better infrastructural facilities and the recently approved increase in sanctioned faculty strength has given a fillip to the vision and spirit of the faculty.
A sense of renewed energy pervades the Faculty with these developments. This has been academically enhanced by a series of lectures by eminent scholars across disciplines on the occasion of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the founder of the University, Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, which culminate on 25th December this year.
The Faculty of Arts continues to carry forward the vision of its great founder, and invites aspiring young scholars to be a part of this unique blend of tradition and modernity.
