About Us

Introduction:

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication was established in 1973. It is one of the most reputed institutions for media studies in the country. Since its inception, it has been producing well trained media professionals every year.The department boasts of an impressive list of alumni who are holding top positions in the industry.

The department is now expanding its horizons from print & electronic journalism to other aspects of communication & media studies such as Corporate Communication, Development Communication, Media Management, Film Appreciation, and Multimedia.
 
Facilities:

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication has the following Facilities:

1. Computer Laboratory: The Department has a state of the art computer lab of 15 computers with internet connectivity. It is available for use of the students for their assignments.

2. Non-Linear Editing Suit: The Department has a small audio-video production unit. This unit comprises two PD- 170 Professional Sony Cameras and two Hard Disk based High-Quality Sony Handycams, non linear editing unit with Final Cut Pro software and audio editing facilities with Protool software.

3. Library: The Department has a library with more than 5000 titles. Some rare books of Journalism and Mass Communication are available in the library.

4. Classical Film Library: The Department has a library of Classical films which are shown to the students regularly. In addition, it has almost all the films of Satyajit Ray.

5. PTI Services: The Department subscribes to the Press Trust of India News Services. The students use the news material for their training.

6. DTH - Dish TV Services: The Department has a dish antenna and uses the feed from the various channels for training purposes.


 

The Community Radio:

The department is preparing itself to become a resource centre for running a community radio station.
   
Special Events:

The department organises the following events:
  • Show good film to the students and the community regularly
  • Organises films festivals regularly, particularly of films that are not screened in the theaters or not available commercially (say classical).
  • Organises special lectures on films/film directors.
  • Organises Seminar, Workshops on Various Current Events.
Course in Media Management:
The department has launched a specialised course in Media Management in collaboration with the

Faculty of Management Sciences, B.H.U.
