Activities


 Future Prospects: (Master Plan for Department of Library and Information Science)

The Department has a following future plans which need consideration and implementation.

  1. The Department of Library and Information Science is involved in imparting quality education in librarianship. The faculty at the Department is competent to meet the new challenges of the profession. The Department plans to become an advanced study centre for information studies.
  2. Department has planned to establish Institutional Repository of Major Disciplines (IRMD) at Banaras Hindu University in order to promote inter-disciplinary research. The quality of teaching depends on the latest tools and techniques used in training. The existing computers need an immediate upgradation as well as new computers should also be added in accordance with number of students. Therefore, Department wishes to develop a new computer laboratory with 26 computers at first floor of building. The necessary initiatives are being taken to have the construction of the first floor on priority.
  3. Department wishes to conduct externally funded projects. There are few in the pipe-line. Department plans to create a separate and relatively small computer laboratory for on going projects and researches.
  4. Every year Department conducts a national workshop or conference on the current trends in librarianship.
  5. Department further wishes to introduce Postgraduate Diploma in Library Automation and Networking Programme for training professionals with latest IT tools.
  6. A self-finance postgraduate level programme in Technical Writing and Electronic Publishing has been proposed in collaboration with Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Banaras Hindu University.
The Department is quite open to conduct cross-disciplinary researches with other departments on their initiatives, if any.


 Conferences/Seminars/Workshops:

The Department has done following Conferences/Seminars/Workshops in recent years.

  1. "National Workshop on Web Applications to Libraries & Information Centers", 2nd-4th March, 2005 held at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.
  2. "National Conference on Community Information Service: Challenges and Opportunities for Libraries", 20th-22nd March, 2006 held at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.
  3. "Workshop on Webpage Designing", April, 2007 held at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in collaboration with Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.
  4. National seminar on "Open Source Library Solutions (OSLS-2009)", January 16-17, 2009 held at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in collaboration with Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) , New Delhi.

Summer School Training:

The Department has conducted summer school training for the students of Department.

  1. "Website design and Applications on Libraries and Information Centres", 8th-29th May, 2008 held at Department of Library & Information Science, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.
Scholarships:

The Department has started 2 scholarships for the students of the Department.

  1. Dr. Hari Krishan Ahluwalia Scholarship
    To be awarded to a male student of M. Lib. & Inf. Sc. (Final) securing highest marks in M. Lib. & Inf. Sc. (Previous) Examination.

  2. Late Mrs. Savita Devi Ahluwalia Scholarship
    To be awarded to a female student of M. Lib. & Inf. Sc. (Final) securing highest marks in M. Lib. & Inf. Sc. (Previous) Examination.
          Duration & Value of Scholarship: Rs. 500/- each (for 12 months) every year.
