                       Brief History

The Department of Musicology established in 1966 which was an integral part of Sangit Kala Mahavidyalaya which was established in B.H.U. in 1950. The Department holds the prestige as being the first institution for Musicology and Research Work in India. This research section was first Headed by Prof. Alain Denielou. He did preparatory work for research in Indian Music but unfortunately he left Varanasi in 1953. In 1957 the founder principal of the college Pt. Omkar Nath Thakur entrusted the research section to his student Dr. Prem Lata Sharma, Reader in Theory & Research. She was well versed in Sanskrit and Hindi literature and had a good knowledge of practical music and modern research methology. With her untiring and continuous scholarly efforts she carried out many research projects and publications in short period. Prof. Premlata Sharma was constant HOD from 1955 – 1989. 

In 1965 Dr. Vimala Musalgaonkar  was appointed in this section as a Sanskrit teacher Her Ph.D dissertation “Music and Philosophy” is an excellent work and is published. 

In 1966, after the section was turned into Department of Musicology, one year certificate course in Music Appreciation, M.Musicology and M.Phil course were introduced. Many Research Scholars were awarded the Ph.D Degree which were of high standard and were subsequently published. Many National Seminars were conducted and lot of high standard publication was carried out.  

Prof. Subhadra Chaudhary was HOD from 1993-1996. 

The department was again started in  2007.At present Dr. Lipika Dasgupta is heading the Department and Dr. Shivram Sharma, a great scholar of Sanskrit is assisting her as an Assistant Professor in Sanskrit and Dr. Neeraj Kumar as  Research Assistant.. 

Prof. Ritwik Sanyal, Dr. Rangnayiki Ayangar, Dr. Vimala Musalgaonkar and Prof. Anil Bihar Beohar are previous mentor of this department. At present  Department.  

Major Objectives:

• The objective of the Department is mainly to cultivate interest and also the in-depth study of History and concept of music theory among the students. Comparative study of Ethnic concept of Western Musicologists with Indian Sangit Shastra. Pre, Post, Modern and Post Modern historical information with concern of various inter-disciplinary relationships of Musicology and various aspects of theories in Musicology.
• To make them good orators and develop good writing skills through sessional work.
•  Department is trying to give them the knowledge of notation system as sight singing and also Indian and Western history of Paleography and notation system. 
• Department is trying to give the student a good and strong practical training for becoming a good performer in their respective field.
•  Department is  also trying to give them the universal conceptual training of musicology 

Broad Future Plans:

1.      We want to starts e-teaching.

2.      To starts Diploma classes in Natya and Ravindra Sangit .

3.      A printing department to educate students  in publication aids.
