Department of Surgical Oncology

Academic Activities :

M.Ch programme in Surgical Oncology was started in 2006. Since then, one candidate, Dr. Umakanth Goud, has already passed out in 2009. Presently, one candidate is selected each year for the M.Ch course through an all-India competitive examination. This number is likely to increase to two.

In addition, several candidates are enrolled as Ph.D. students in the department for various kinds of research activities. The postgraduates in the Department of General Surgery also have their rotation in the Department of Surgical Oncology and some of them are doing their thesis work primarily in this department.

Clinical Activities :

The department performs all kinds of operative work encompassing surgeries for Head & Neck, Thoracic, Breast, Musculoskeletal, Gastrointestinal, Gynecological & Urologic malignancies.
All kinds of endoscopies - upper GI endoscopy, direct laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy, nasopharyngoscopy and colonoscopy are performed and the residents are trained in these procedures.

Medical oncology work is also shared by the Department of Surgical Oncology. Patients receive chemotherapy as neo-adjuvant, adjuvant, definitive or palliative treatment.
