Education in Engineering & Technology commenced at the University eighty years ago with the establishment of the Banaras Engineering College (BENCO), College of Mining & Metallurgy (MINMET) and College of Technology (TECHNO) respectively in the years 1919, 1923 and 1932. The three premier engineering Institutions were merged to form the Institute of Technology (IT-BHU) which came into full-fledged existence in 1971. Presently it comprises 13 Departments, 3 interdisciplinary Schools, 3 Centers of Advanced Studies, 3 Special Assistance Programmes, and several Central Facilities like the prestigious National Electron Microscopy Facility, Main Workshop, Institute Library, Training & Placement Cell, CISF, Rural Housing Wing and the Institute Gymkhana. The Institute offers 4 year (8 Semester) B.Tech. courses in Ceramic, Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Metallurgical and Mining Engineering and also a B.Pharm. Course in Pharmaceutics. Admission to the undergraduate programmes is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) along with the IITs. In the case of B.  Pharm., half the intake is through JEE and the rest is by means of combined PMT-PAT Examination of BHU. Masters' programmes (M.Tech./M. Pharm.) of 3 Semesters duration are offered in all the branches (except Computer Engineering) and also in Industrial Management, Systems Engineering, Materials Technology, Bio-Chemical and Bio-Medical Engineering. Candidates who qualify in the national level Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) are eligible for admission to the P.G. Courses. All the Departments and Schools of the Institute nurture Ph.D. programmes. Doctoral programmes are open to the NET/GATE qualified candidates and also those who pass the RET of BHU. A few candidates from reputed Industries and National Laboratories are also accepted as External Research Scholars. Faculty members and research scholars are engaged in research and development work in many frontier areas of Engineering & Technology with the support of different funding agencies like the UGC, CSIR, DOE, DST, ARDB, DAE, AICTE, DRDO, and many reputed Industries such as TISCO, ONGC, SAIL, BHEL, HINDALCO, GAIL, FCI, COAL INDIA, etc. The Institute provides Industrial Consultancy and Testing Services of different kinds to a large number of industries. During the preceding five years, about 950 research papers were published and 900 presented; two dozen Books & Conference Proceedings were also published and 54 Symposia, Seminars, Workshops and Summer/Winter Schools were organized. During the past five years the faculty members have delivered about 350 invited lectures and have to their credit over a 100 National/International recognitions. and have opportunities for personality development by participation in Co-curricular, Extra-curricular, Games and Sports activities organized by the IT-Gymkhana. The placement position of the students is one of the best in the country with practically every B. Tech./B. Pharm. student getting very lucrative job offers through the Campus Interviews.
