Major Scientific Contributions

Prof. H. B. Srivastava has contributed significantly in the field of strain studies, structure and tectonics of fold and thrust belts of crystalline rocks of Lesser and Higher Himalaya and modeling of deformed structures in the laboratory.

(a) Strain Studies: Prof. Srivastava has developed new techniques of estimating strain from deformed Fabrics and from fold profiles. He has contributed for the first time, a large amount (~80%) of volume loss and the fabric pattern in a high-grade ductile shear zones.

(b) Integrated studies on Structure, Strain and Metamorphism: Dr. Srivastava's work on structures, strain and metamorphism in Dudatoli Mussoorie and Almora, synclines of Lesser Himalaya and Central Crystallines exhibit poly-phased deformation and metamorphism and has demonstrated the mechanism of development of Crenulation Cleavage in low grade metamorphites. Further his work on dynamic analysis of mesoscopic shear zones from MCT Zone suggests a NNE-SSW horizontal compression responsible for the northward movement of Indian Plate.

(c) Analogue modeling of deformed structures: Prof. Srivastava has set a new trend of analogue modeling to delineate the deformational features which occurred due to collision of Indian plate with Asian plate and demonstrated that the, western and eastern syntaxial bends of Himalaya are due to concentration of deformation within Asian continent directly in front of two strong horns of oceanic lithosphere that flank India. His work on unconformable multilayered sequence, demonstrates the intensity of folding and their relationship with shortening directions.
