Area of specialization/awards/achievements:
 

My specialization is fish reproduction/ comparative endocrinology, particularly my research interests center around the role of growth hormone (GH)/ insulin like growth factor-I (IGF-I) axis, an interface between nutrition and reproduction, in fish reproduction. We have purified and characterized GH from the freshwater Asian catfish and developed specific polyclonal antibody against it and also the homologous ELISA system for GH. GH antibody is serving as reagent in exploring various aspects of role of GH in somatic and gonadal growth and development of the catfish. First the time, we have shown the role of GH in resumption of oocyte maturation in fishes. We have also demonstrated the nitric oxide synthase (NOS)/NO system in the fish testis as well as in the isolated Leydig cells and testicular macrophages for the first time in ectothermic vertebrate and its important role in spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis in fish. In recent years, we have started working on expressions of some neuropeptides such as kisspeptins, GnIH, GnRH, Nesfatin, etc. in brain and gonad of the catfish and their role in regulation of fish reproduction.
