Introduction

The field of Endocrinology and Metabolism has been an important part in the vision about Institute of Medical Sciences since the inception of the institute in 1960. The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism was established in 1964 as part of the Department of Medicine. Diabetes and thyroid OPD was started in 1964 and inpatient services commenced in 1971. The DM (Endocrinology) course was started in 1976 (second after PGIMER Chandigarh). The division was later upgraded to the status of Department in the year 1998. The Medical Council of India in the year 2000 approved DM (Endocrinology) course providing recognition to the course since it started in 1976
