Venue of the Workshop/Conference
The workshop/conference will be held in the beautiful campus of Banaras Hindu University, a great seat of learning, located in the ancient and holy city of Varanasi. It is also known as the city of Lord Vishwanath, situated at the bank of Holy River Ganges and is famous for its ghats and temples. The city, almost at a distance of 700 kilometers south-east of Delhi, is well connected by air, rail and road with other parts of country. The University is at about 10 kilometers from the railway station and 30 kilometers from the airport. The main city is at a distance of nearly 5 kilometers from the University campus where one can enjoy sunrise or sunset standing at the bank of river Ganges. The famous Lord Vishwanath temple is situated in the main city. Other worth seeing places in Varanasi are Sarnath (where the Buddha preached his first sermon), Bharat Kala Bhavan, Bharat Mata Mandir, Ramnagar Fort and the University itself.
Varanasi enjoys a pleasant winter with a daytime temperature of around 15-20°C. The temperature can touch a minimum of around 5-6°C in late December and early January with heavy fog at the beginning of the day.
Accommodation at BHU/Varanasi
The University has few guest houses inside the campus. The accommodations are limited and, therefore, we suggest you to intimate us well in advance.
The participants from abroad are encouraged to stay at the hotels in the city, which offer better facilities. Good hotels at moderate rates are available. Since Varanasi attracts many tourists with a peak season in January, it is advisable to make early reservations. Good accommodations are available from INR 2500/- to INR 5000/- per night for both single and double occupancies (1 US dollar = INR (Indian Rupees) 43/- approximately). Please add 5% extra towards other charges. Cheap hotel accommodations (Rs. 800/- onwards) may also be arranged provided intimation to this effect is conveyed to the convener with your exact requirement. We definitely suggest you to go for early reservations in order to avoid last minute trouble in arranging good accommodations.
Reservations will be made and guaranteed if the deposit is received by September 20, 2004. Adjustments of the balance amount, if any, will be made at the time of departure depending upon the length of stay, type of room, etc. Please let us know in advance, we shall be pleased to offer you all kinds of help in finalizing your accommodation requirements.
Conference organizers have finalized a special (subsidized) deal with the following hotel (star rating is five).
Khajuraho (a city of enchanting ancient temples) and Agra (famous for the Taj Mahal, the abandoned capital Fatehpur Sikri, the Agra fort and Sekendra, the tomb of Akbar) are well connected from Varanasi by air and rail. The approximate distance from Varanasi to Khajuraho is 500 kms. whereas Agra is at a distance of nearly 700 kms.
Recreation during your stay
The Conference Organizers have arranged a classical cultural programme soon after the Inaugural Function on January 5, 2005. We then have a dinner at a suitably chosen place in the city (preferably a good hotel to be decided soon). Besides, we are also arranging a half-day local excursion to Sarnath on January 9, 2005 and early morning visit to river Ganges for watching the sunrise. We are also having a plan of boating on river Ganges in the afternoon of January 6, 2005.
The Registration amount of US $ 150 includes all the above except that we are expecting a nominal amount of US $ 15 for an early morning trip to river Ganges.
The participants from India are, however, expected to pay additional amount for these.
